Ubuntu set up

i am planning on installing ubuntu on my machine. i want to know if when i replace my current system do i lose everything on that drive? and what everyone recomends to get for ubuntu

As a Linux user for the past 3-4 years (Not a Expert) I am going to guide you in the right direction.
1. Forget Ubuntu. In Ubuntu 11.04, they started using "Unity" which is absolutely BALLS!
2. Get Linux Mint 11. Mint 11 is based off Ubuntu but uses a different interface and doesn't have Unity or anything like that. Download Linux Mint here
3. Dual-Boot your system. If you have a copy of Windows that you want to keep. Keep it. When you are going to install Mint (Or Ubuntu if you decide to) there is a option that will allow you to install the Operating System side-by-side. You will be able to access your Windows files in Ubuntu but not the other way round
4a. When you get Ubuntu (or Mint) Banshee is a music player that is available by default. Forget using it and grab "RhythmBox" from the Ubuntu Software Center" or "Software Manager"
4b. Browser...Whatever you like, Firefox is installed by default....You can get Google Chrome and Opera, so there is enough of decent browsers out there for you.
4c. You should have LibreOffice for Word Processing.
I don't know what you are going to do but hopefully this can get you started.

thank you Vamp that was very helpful. i am mainly doing this untill i get my new PC at the end of the year. i need to use something that isn't windows to try and free up some processing power. i will definatly take MINT into consideration

hey vamp im back, i need help agian LOL. i went to install ubuntu (yes i chose that by popular demand) i went to install it on my hard drive which i have partitioned into two seperate drives. one of them failed and i had to fix it, so it is the drive i want to install on. the other drive is my XP drive. i don't know how to install on the fixed drive. if you need visual aid i can provide pictures.

There should be a option saying "Install alongside Windows XP" (Or something to that effect) that would install it to the 2nd partition.

Your instaling from a live boot of ubuntu?
Are you using disk or usb drive(unetbootin)?
You may have to use the partition editor to format the fixed drive to ext4 and designate root(/).
Have you checked the MD5 of your iso? The reason i ask this, was the installation attempt the cause of the disk failure?
I recently updated my downloader lapper, it was running mint 8 helena since its release. I tried installing mint 9 isadora with fluxbox but as the lapper is an old dell, it wouldn't install.
Using mint 11 katya now - all good

In the pic above it shows all your drive formatted to ntfs. If you format the one you want to use to ext4, it should become available to install linux onto it.
If they are all ntfs, the partitioner might think they are being used. I could be wrong there.
I remember the first time I dual booted, the partitoner resized my ntfs drive by 50gig, formatted it and then installed linux onto it. I haven't seen that option in a while.

Ok, After looking at all this. Do the following.
Make sure you are installing it to the correct drive. Go into Windows and give the Local Disk (The one that you are going to install Ubuntu onto) so that you know which drive to use!
You have to create 3 partitions on that drive
Since you have 98GB to play with, this is what it should be
You should be good with this.
Don't change the option for the boot loader, leave it default.
Make sure you are installing it to the correct drive. Go into Windows and give the Local Disk (The one that you are going to install Ubuntu onto) so that you know which drive to use!

On Linux, you should always use "ext4 Journaling File System", You CAN'T use NTFS in Linux.

now that its set up i have one question. WHERE THE HELL DID XP GO? i can not seem to boot to XP. i mean its all still there. at least the files are there, the folders are all there. just how do i get at it

Are you using GRUB?
You chould be able to edit your grub.cfg to allow OS choice at boot
open terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and type :
or if your not root
you may not have to be root to change grub.cfg in ubuntu.
Google what you need to change in it or post it here so we can all have a gawk
Odd it did not detect XP and add it to grub, if your using it.

Are you geting a Grub menu when you boot - according to your grub.cfg you should have a menu with 4 items on it:
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic'
'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic (recovery mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)"
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200
If this is the case your missing your xp selection entry.
You can try adding one
My one is in the os-prober section but you have your timeout code there.
You may need to get a look at an ubuntu version as my xp boot section is from mint and looks like this:
Somethng went wrong with your install. You could probably copy and paste my entry above into your grub.cfg and fix any errors that come up, like your xp might not be on sda1, so you might need to change that and you may need to define your own boot point for xp.
EDIT: I was curious to not see a menu.lst in my grub folder and i presume yours is the same, and i think this is the reason and might help you sort your issue

well i looked at the forum you linked and tried OS prober and it still came back with no XP. i am dubious about adding your os prober section to my grub.cfg just because there are some things i don't know. still trying tho

You may have deleted your xp boot sector, without that grub might not have recognised a second operating system.
You may need to use a boot disk to boot back into xp and use CMD and type fixboot or fixmbr. This would create a new boot sector for xp and wen you get back into ubuntu, run update-grub2 again.
If you find you cant get back into ubuntu after creating the boot sector, just boot the live version and do it through that.

Um well appearently using OS Prober deleted my grub boot loader. so i cant even get back into Ubuntu. Cool. gonna go back to XP wen this is over.

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. Have you deleted your ext4 partition and ran fixmbr to get back into XP at least.
I find that linux just sometimes doesn't want to play nice. I hate those days

no i did not delete anything or run fixmbr. my computer is in the words of a techie "on life support" i am thinking about just blowing away the drive and setting it up again.

well i got ubuntu back somehow when i was trying to get XP back.

Glad you got fixed up.
Funny, lilo is a boot loader similiar to Grub. we used it alot back when using suse linux
